Follow-up Comment #12, bug #52988 (project octave):

I can also verify the painfully slow display of large matrices.  I used 'x =
rand (1000)' to avoid the segfault I get with with 5000.

I turned off Autofit as well as "Plus font height".  After opening the
variable in the Variable Editor I used the mouse to resize the widget and
change the number of columns displayed.  This seemed to trigger a massive
update event which made the GUI unresponsive.
