Follow-up Comment #1, bug #53005 (project octave):

It really does seem as if the display code is being called every single time
Octave returns to the prompt.  If I adjust a column size so it is not the
Autofit value, and then just <Return> in the Command Window then all of the
GUI pauses for a few seconds while it updates things and then snaps the column
size back to the Autofit value.
