I'd say it's rather a basic Windows proficiency issue at that.
"*" and '?' are wildcards and don't belong in an actual filename.
Octave duly says that the filename is invalid. I just tried with Matlab and
that simply refuses to react to the "Save" button when trying to save a plot
to "test*.png" without any indication of a faulty filename.
So there you go with "commercial packages".
