Follow-up Comment #20, bug #49839 (project octave):
texinfo was updated to 6.5 in the meantime and I now see the following line in
the log file:
checking whether we can build Perl extension (XS) modules... yes
However, I still get the perl error with a recent MXE cross-build on Windows:
>> s = __makeinfo__( "@documentencoding UTF-8\nX @var{x}")
