Andrew: I modified the step-02 of your changesets in bug #54219 to also work
on Windows and pushed it to default here:

With this we have a common way to select between multiple installed JVM on all
supported platforms. Thanks.
I'll leave the other two MacOS specific parts in that bug report to someone
who has a background in Mac development.
