Follow-up Comment #2, bug #54505 (project octave):

Ok, so this might be related to FreeType 2.6 vs 2.8. There were some changes
in font metrics with the 2.8 release (see for example
https://savannah.nongnu.org/bugs/?52165). I am using FreeType 2.8.1.
