Follow-up Comment #2:

This wasn't too hard in the end to implement.  I checked in a change that adds
support for cdata to pushbuttons and togglebuttons here
https://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/88e87c69c8b8.  This will be a
part of the 5.0.0 release this winter.

Marking as fixed and closing report.
