Follow-up Comment #1:
This bug has been fixed a long time ago and Octave 4.0 is very old. Could you
upgrade to Octave 4.4? If you don't want to recompile Octave from source, I
think Linux Mint 18.3 provides an easy way to install state of the art
software through the use of Flatpack.
