Follow-up Comment #16, bug #54607 (project octave):
I don't know whether this would add more confusion than it would help.
At the moment the same codepage is used for displaying and executing m-files
(by default). The codepage that is used for executing m-files is defined
globally.
With these potentially new heuristics for the editor, a user might be confused
if their file displays correctly in the editor but seemingly uses different
(incorrect) strings on execution.
For the same sake, it might even be useful to completely remove the codepage
selection from the file opening dialog...
