You're right Mike. I never use the zip files, always the .exe installers so I
overlooked this simple but deceiving "pkg rebuild" thing.
That said io-2.4.9 is quite old anyway.
Maybe the OP didn't start Octave using octave.vbs; in which case I suspect
many paths required by Octave won't be initialized properly.
