Follow-up Comment #5, bug #54924 (project octave):

I implemented the "compact" argument in this cset:
https://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/940aabcd6fdb.  Results will vary
based on how well gzip can compress the data, but on a figure that had a
sombrero() in it, file size went from 80KB to 17KB or ~4X.
