Follow-up Comment #15:
@jwe: When does this code get invoked? Is it only when path() is called? I
don't feel like I know enough about when it is used to be able to say whether
it should be removed or not. If you think we don't need it, however, then I'm
fine with removing it. I'll check in the temporary fix on stable.
