Follow-up Comment #17, bug #47680 (project octave):

Yes, I mean that 


this . addRequired @ inputParser( name, validator );


is interpreted as


this ('.', 'addRequired', '@', ... );


On the other, you are right, in the context of an assignment operator things
are different.  More precisely,


x = this . addRequired @ inputParser( name, validator );


works exactly as if there were no spaces around the dot and the @-sign.
