Follow-up Comment #16, bug #55751 (project octave):
The attached patch implements the eigenvalue approach in graphics.cc.
As far as I can tell this performs about twice as fast on the original example
than the current svd approach.
In graphics.cc we need an algorithm that groups the vertices into coplanar
subsets. Checking whether the whole set is coplanar is only part of it.
If you have any ideas how to further speed this up, I'd be very interested.
