Follow-up Comment #9:
I guess the bottom line is it's possible any particular LaTeX engine may
default to UTF-8 input, but for strict compatibility the file should contain
'\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}'. Reopening.
Will the LaTeX file written by Octave always be encoded in UTF-8?
