Follow-up Comment #25:

Wow, this bug has been unresolved since 2013!

I bet this actually fixes around 5 bug reports on Savannah as this same issue
has been at the root of a lot of incompatibility with Matlab.  It will be a
matter of searching for the right terms to find them.

I checked in a changed to NEWS to announce this important change
(https://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/fab67369e802).

The tests from comment #19 and #20 pass for me.  Marking as fixed and closing
report.
