I pushed this changeset:

With stable and default I now see
octave:1> test stem
PASSES 10 out of 10 tests
octave:2> gcbo
ans = [](0x0)
on both stable and default. And the original example takes a fraction of a
second instead of 10+ on my system.
Closing this report as fixed.
