Follow-up Comment #9, bug #56097 (project octave):

Being UNIX, I wonder if this is really a permissions issue in your temporary
directory.

Could you try creating a local temporary directory and using it instead of
/tmp?

In a shell, execute


mkdir ~/octtmp
chmod 777 ~/octtmp


Then, start Octave and try the following


octave-5.1.0 -f --gui
tempdir ()
setenv ("TMPDIR", tilde_expand ("~/octtmp"))
tempdir ()
help sin
