Follow-up Comment #2:

The release 4.2.2 is ancient and no longer supported.  The original reporter
should upgrade to the current stable version of Octave (5.1.0) as soon as
possible.

As Dmitri noted, the examples work fine in a more recent version of Octave. 
Also, for bz_1.m you should close the file after you are done appending to it.
 This will allow you to do what you want even with version 4.2.2.  I uploaded
that file as bz_2.m for reference.
