Thank you for this hint, Pantxo.
Yes, I still had (for historic reasons) a "defaulttextname" of "Arial" set in
my startup.m under Windows. But now that Octave ships with FreeSans, this is
unnecessary and it corrupted my tests for this bug.
Using the code from comment #33 (with the default "*" font), I now get the
proper diameter sign displayed.
So I am fully happy with closing this bug report (better: keeping it closed).
It has really been fixed. Probably by including the FreeSans font into the
mxe-octave distribution.
