I confirmed that the patch from comment #4 now makes scanf behave the same
with %e and %E, as well as %g and %G:

ans = 0.00000034568
>> sscanf ("345678E-12", "%e")
ans = 0.00000034568
>> sscanf ("345678e-12", "%E")
ans = 0.00000034568
>> sscanf ("345678E-12", "%E")
