Follow-up Comment #4, bug #57133 (project octave):
@koler, what OS are you running on here?
Works for me on macOS 10.14.6: `fprintf(stdout, '%s\n', 128)` emits the
"invalid character" placeholder glyph, and subsequent output works as normal.
