Follow-up Comment #14, bug #57740 (project octave):

The previous exceptional treatment ".0" proved to be too error prone. Each RC
is worthless, when the real installer one day is build with a total different
recipe and version scheme.
I prefer the new fix to be super simple and stupid. Maybe just put a text
file with the MXE hg id (for stable/default/release) in the distribution
folder? This is fool proof and enough for any hypothetical installer
identification scenario.
In general I hope that fixing the MXE installer should stay an exception,
rather than a rule.
Thus I want to concentrate on making the default release workflow easier to
release more often stable versions of Octave. One year between releases for
such a big software project is in my opinion too rare.
