Actually, this was easier to fix than I thought.  I checked in a change on the
development branch here
(https://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/a56ee7986ea4).

In order to see the fix you will need to be able to download the source code
from Octave Mercurial repository and then compile.  Or wait until the 7.1
release of Octave.

This might get backported to the 6.1 release, but that is not yet certain.
