Follow-up Comment #15:

I checked in a change on the development branch of Octave.  See
https://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/8d2f9cfc16bc.

I'm going to mark as fixed and close the report.  The fix is pretty small, so
it could be backported to the stable branch, but someone else can decide that.
