Follow-up Comment #2:

This is introduced by removing trailing spaces when saving an editor file, for
which the complete text was replaced (clearing the undo-history). This should
be fixed by changeset http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/44f2d73df4b3
