Follow-up Comment #1:

Thank you for your report.  Can you be precise, what the output of Matlab
R2020a is?  In R2020b, I receive for your example the stated error and no
assignment happens.

Thus Octave seems perfectly Matlab compatible.  Personally, I favor this error
too, as no values get ignored unnoticed.

Is there anything left to do?
