Details:

MATLAB's ifft built-in function supports a 'symmetric' flag, resulting in
real-valued output.
Octave's ifft does not support this flag.
Easy fix can be found from this:

If 'symmetric' flag is there, run the forceFFTSymmetry function (see link
provided) on the input data and run the currently used ifft.
