Follow-up Comment #37:
It looks like (at least for the time being) we cannot fully replace python2
with python3 for all packages.
That means that it is not necessary to push everything here in one go. I hope
that the risk of breaking something is smaller when doing incremental steps
(or at least this way it might be easier to find the error in case something
breaks).
As the initial steps I pushed John Donogue's change that allows the python
scripts in MXE Octave to run with python3 here:

Additionally, I pushed this change to add a build rule for python3:
https://hg.octave.org/mxe-octave/rev/fb50ae69121c
With these changes, some of the other patches probably no longer apply
cleanly. I'll update them when I come around to it.
