Details:
The feature request is that when a new release of octave is released then when
the notification popup that notifies the user about that release pops up it
includes a button which says something along the lines of "Update now".
Octave can then prompt the user for if the current version should be
uninstalled or not and then the new version of octave should be installed.
This makes usability of the program simpler and will allow more people to use
octave.
Some comments:
- In the Help>About octave you can find the system that octave was installed
on, this can be used do know which system octave will install the new version
on.
- To begin with it's possible to make a program that simply downloads the
installer for the new version and runs it.
- The next step could be to create the prompt to uninstall the old version
(it's possible to do that after installation of the new version is complete,
that way if something goes wrong with the installation at least you have the
old version still working).
- A finalized version could update octave by only changing the files that
need to be modified and folder names that need modification. Without having to
do a clean install of the new version each time. Good for users with limited
data and faster updating.
