Follow-up Comment #21, bug #61968 (project octave):
Thanks for clarifying the difference between xelem and elem. I might have
confused that with the difference between operator() and elem.
I still don't understand why one of the branches would need to be handled
differently from all other branches in this respect.
I changed it to use `xelem` in that branch together with a few other changes
here:
