Follow-up Comment #11, bug #61319 (project octave):

A quick profiling shows that the patch is about twice as slow as the current
version in the worst cases ("ceil" and "floor"). The difference is a bit
smaller for "fix" (no call to `abs()`), and there is of course no difference
for "round".
