Follow-up Comment #6, bug #62352 (project octave):

Another possibility is to change Octave's exit code so that it attempts to
record some status about a crash and then on startup to present some options
at startup depending on whether a previous session crashed.  That could all be
done within the GUI prior to loading the resources file.
