Follow-up Comment #3, bug #62409 (project octave):

I'm not sure, but the index type in Octave might be signed. The maximum number
of elements might be 2^31 (approx. 2.1e9).
I'm not sure if it is actually an issue with the maximum index size itself or
with memory (fragmentation?) with multiple very large matrices. (It could be
either. I should probably have been more careful with my conclusions in
comment #0.)

Depending on what the actual underlying issue is, you might be able to
reproduce in the version you mentioned (Windows 32-bit).
