Follow-up Comment #24:

I was able to reproduce the issue on Debian/Gnome. It looks like the routine
which replaces the trailing spaces hangs in an endless loop. From my testing
so far, the issue only seems to occur when the removal of trailing spaces is
activated in the preferences and if the file actually has trailing spaces.

I am currently trying to find the specific cause in the replace routine.

*For now, please disable the preference "Remove trailing spaces when saving
file" in the editor tab of the preferences dialog*.
