Follow-up Comment #1:

Octave is only doing what you asked it to do: display an absurdly large range.
Displaying takes time to prepare and execute.

Try adding a semicolon to the end of the statement and it will respond more
quickly, because it no longer has to display it.

Closing as invalid since this is not a bug, just Octave following user
instructions.
