I pushed a change here that implements the new behavior of Matlab in Octave
(because it makes kind of sense to me):

I opted for staying close to the current behavior (because it matches Matlab)
instead of trying to implement the behavior described in the comments (and
updated the comments instead).

Marking as ready for test.
