Follow-up Comment #8, bug #63444 (project octave):

I wasn't thinking this was production code.  This was just to see if the slow
down was coming from the loop body or the loop structure.  I used the same
indexing structure in each loop body because I was only interested in relative
performance rather than absolute performance.
