@svillemot: could you run the test from comment #2 on Debian Sid and see if
the assertions pass please?

I compiled Octave 8.0.1 (hg id: ccbf38427774) by hand on Debian unstable/sid,
on an amd64 machine, and ran the test from comment #2. All the assertions
pass.

Also note that I plan to upload Octave 8 to Debian experimental as soon as
there is a release candidate available.
