Follow-up Comment #1:

Matlab doesn't document accepting location entries with spaces in them. 
Octave generally does not bother to follow undocumented behavior because it
could change at any time.

I changed the x,y,z ticklabels functions to accept empty char inputs in this
changeset (http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/9546e993e9ee).  This is
on the development branch of Octave.
