But yes, you're right.
https://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/0826c503f294 makes changes to
utf-8 handling. I can't build it (unless someone has ideas on how to disable
symbfact etc) but it looks eminently plausible. It certainly wouldn't be
caught on utf-8 encodings.
