Follow-up Comment #33, bug #63415 (project octave): This bug report is spread over 3 different bugs. Most of the discussion is there: https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?63931 Short summary: Some time during 7.1 -> 8.0 transition m-file encoding in octave was changed. One of the changes was that changing encoding in gui editor would also change encoding in the gui command window. You can reproduce the bug in cli version if you run manually __mfile_encoding__("latin1") (you can replace "latin1 with pretty much anything else except "utf-8") Also, if you set in gui encoding to "utf-8" the bug will disappear.
