Follow-up Comment #21, bug #64516 (project octave):

We are going in circles. To spell it out clearly again: This is a
documentation issue. The current behavior needs to stay for compatibility with
older code and with Matlab.

The *only* way to avoid errors in user code is to better document how those
functions need to be used.
If no one (e.g., you) will work on improving the documentation, nothing will
change.
