Thanks, Dmitri. That indeed explains what I'm seeing.

Since there's nothing Octave itself can do to guard against it, I'll close
this as invalid (upstream bug). If anyone else finds this bug report, the
specific version of the library that causes the error is GraphicsMagick
1.3.41.

Workarounds: Use a different version of GraphicsMagick, or use
`--with-magick=` to point to ImageMagick when configuring Octave until your
system gets a fixed version of GraphicsMagick.
