Follow-up Comment #4:

That was the pointer I needed.  The final call to put a newline on the output
stream in interpreter.cc doesn't need a flush() command.  I checked in the
change here https://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/c34d571b5855.
