Follow-up Comment #1:

I can confirm the issue with the current 9.0.90 which is to become Octave 9:
the cursor is hardly visible when it is next to an highlighted matching
parenthesis (fat white rectangle in dark mode). Changing the background color
of the current line (in the editor color preferences) from the default dark
gray to light gray helps and shows that the cursor is actually still blinking.
