thanks for the check @Denis. so this does appear to be a regression that
snuck under the radar for a few versions. If it seems likely this is fixable
in a few iterations it would be good to get into stable before the release.
If not, it would be good to at least get a set of xtests in place, along with
maybe a broader set if any are indicated by this report.
