Follow-up Comment #1:

I added support for "none" to TickDir in changeset 7e774d71c491.  At the same
time I added "both" as a value that the property could take, but the actual
rendering behind it is not implemented.  

Change needs to happen in graphics.cc.  Either in render_tickmarks() or in the
three functions that call it (draw_axes_[xyz]_grid).

The fix probably ends up on the development branch first, and then grafted
back onto stable at first bug fix point release after 9.1.
