Follow-up Comment #4:

The attached patch makes setting "tickdir" to "both" draw ticks at both sides
of the axes for me.

The patch adds support only for the OpenGL graphics backends. Afaict, the
gnuplot graphics backend no longer has the same level of support anyway.
