Sorry if I haven't been clear enough before. Trying again:
It looks like the issue is caused by some update function not doing the right
thing when properties are changed in a certain order.
If that is an issue when calling the `patch` function, it is likely also an
issue when changing properties with the `set` function. Any change to the
`patch` function will likely not fix the issue. It would only complicate the
code to work around an issue that should be fixed elsewhere entirely.
